Rated as a World Heritage Site since 2001, this is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, ordered by the Marquis of Pombal in 1756. The thirteen counties that are part of the zone have been distinguished by UNESCO: Alijó, Armamar, Carrazeda of Ansiães, Lamego, Mesão Frio, Peso da Régua, Sabrosa, Santa Marta de Penaguião, São João da Pesqueira, Tabuaço, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Nova de Foz Coa and Vila Real.
A visit to the Port Wine Route is strongly recommended. You can enjoy guided tours of the wineries, wine tasting and the chance to try out the best regional cuisine dishes. In September be sure to participate in the magic ritual of the Harvest Feast. You are invited to pick grapes during the morning and in the afternoon be a part of the "lagaradas", where the grapes are placed in old granite mills and then treaded in the traditional way (wiyth your bare feet) – all in a festive atmosphere, with singing and dancing, celebrating the year’s harvest. At this feast there are many regional delicacies to be tasted and, of course, wine, lots of wine!
Take a trip back in time ... and discover the most beautiful landscapes of the Douro Historical Steam Train Line, between Régua and the Tua station, stopping at Pinhão. Here, the animation is guaranteed! The Douro charms can also be discovered on a tour cruise on the Douro River, so important to the region: the Port wine barrels were transported downstream to Oporto and Gaia in special boats called “Rabelos”.
