Amarante is a romantic city where time passes slowly! The architecture and the Tâmega river greatly contribute to the uniqueness of this destination.
Go to the historic center and sit quietly on one of the terraces along the river Tamega. Have a cup of coffee! It is recommended a coffee with one of the irresistible desserts. Don’t miss out the Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Museum, Here, you will find the timeless works of this painter, considered the most representative of Portuguese modernism of the early twentieth century, with features of Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism.
Visit the Church and Monastery of São Gonçalo, the Patron Saint of Amarante, who was allegedly an expert in matchmaking and bindings of women who were "stranded". At the expense of this religious belief, there are cakes with a very curious design... which we will not unravel!! You can buy them at Rua 31 de Janeiro, and expect them to cause a lot of laughs!
